JUNG CHAEHEE
Artist Statement
My work explores the reconstruction of sentiments and emotions inspired from the moment I observe something in nature. My primary medium of choice is Korean traditional lacquer(Ottchil), although I also make use of other natural materials such as wood, yellow clay, mother-of-pearl, eggshells, and gold foil, all of which were traditionally used throughout The Far East.
In my work, these media are no less important than the image itself. My materials were once perfect creatures of nature that deeply affect my inner soul. I then try to establish in my work a relationship between these life forms and nature itself. My objective is to make the organic process of working with these materials by reusing them in my work to be reborn as new images. In that manner, I believe my work becomes like life itself, inter-organically involved and continuing their life cycle.
**‘Ott or Ottchil Painting‘ is a Korean word for natural lacquer, referring to the genre of painting that mainly uses natural lacquer, which is a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean lacquer techniques.*
