Kim Hak Kyun
Artist Statement
The word SUPER, which has become a symbol of power, is recognized as a guardian of justice and human peace.
In fact, the image of Superman as we know was created in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932 by American author Jerry Segal and Canadian cartoonist Joe Schuster.
It is the time when various art trends occurred during 1930s. It was an era where everyone was swirled up between the two world wars which made it the most difficult era of modern humanity.
In order to express various and complex elements of the composition, characters with various identities are sometimes referred to as birth “SUPER”. The meaning of SUPER is beyond reality or “Something Good”.
The Nietzsche Übermensc” superman is used as the American “Superman”. The main core theme of Ubermensh Nietzsche’s thought is downfall. In simple terms, Annihilation is to be in a state of loss of motivation and complete self-absence, whereas decline is a concept that presupposes re-creation.
In other words, the fall of Charatustra becomes a prerequisite for re-creation of the surrounding environment.
What is Hak Kyun Kim's “SUPER” series? It was intensively created during the “COVID-19” period. In “SUPER”, “SUPER” refers to how the human race will overcome the devasting period of the disease and rise. It is created to tell positive and inspirational message for everyone. God of conquest and victory, equivalent to Victoria in Roman mythology.
In other words, I want to speak of the victory of mankind.
Therefore, I would like to say that my (Kim Hak Kyun) “SUPER” expresses the strongest and greatest hopes of humanity today. I add that it is also (pop and neo-pop) in style.
My work is expressed in the ways where the negative views of the contemporary era with expressions that look innocent, such as satire, humor, and cynical cuteness through exaggeration and transformation in form.
The character I used is expressed as “Super baby” and “Super Dog”. I am doing three-dimensional and planar work at the same time.
I want to express a stronger hope from absolute despair through "SUPER ".
